Letter from the Director
Dear Friends & Colleagues- PASSWORD:
New Mexico CultureNet seeks volunteers for Writers Corps, a pilot literacy program that focuses on at-risk eighth grade students in Language Arts (English). The Writer Corps pilot program has been endorsed by Superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez and Associate Superintendent Denise Johnston. We are calling for persons with strong literacy skills to work as part of a team consisting of one teacher and three volunteers (1-2 hrs/wk). The teacher-volunteer team will engage students in small breakout groups that focus on aspects of the course where students are struggling. Once a week, the class will be split into four small groups, allowing the students more individual attention and engagement than in a typical setting, thereby increasing their potential for successful learning.
We are targeting eighth graders because it is this group that is having a terribly hard time when they move up to high school--ninth graders are failing in alarming numbers. And as these youngsters become more frustrated by their failures, they shut down, give up and drop out of school. As you may know, our state’s dropout rate is almost 20 percentage points higher than the national average. With your help, we can make a difference.
If you are a Santa Fe area resident and are interested in volunteering for Writers Corps, please contact me via email. Please email a resume or bio along with two personal or professional references to Alex Traube, Executive Director, New Mexico CultureNet, alex@nmculturenet.org. We will conduct orientation in early February and begin the program immediately thereafter.
Thank you for considering this.
Alex Traube
Executive Director
